Common Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is in our garden. This is a deciduous shrub of the holly family known for its brilliant red berries.
The Common Winterberry plant has male and female flowers on separate plants, both of which must be present to produce the red berries.
The berries are not safe for human consumption.
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, at wildflower.org, features an unrestricted photo of the Winterberry berries by Stephanie Brundage.
